Choosing A PA System
It is a great idea to observe the pre-purchase considerations before you buy anything. Choosing a PA system is no different. There are a number of technical as well as nontechnical considerations that need to be observed before choosing a PA system.
Non Technical Considerations:
The foremost non technical consideration is if you want to by a complete PA system or if you want to purchase all the required equipment individually. The main benefit with a complete PA system is that it is a one stop solution for all your needs. Its draw backs include expensive proprietary cables and connectors which are not easily available.
On the other hand if you purchase the different components separately, you do not have to bother about proprietary connectivity because in most cases they are based on open standards. You do not have to be restricted with the cable supplied by PA component vendor either. You can make your own cables because the connectors are easily available in the market. Another consideration is the number of components that you want to purchase. Naturally you have to buy more speakers to cover a larger area and extra PA microphones to accommodate more announcers. Technical considerations The technical considerations of choosing a PA system can be discussed on a device to device basis. First of all the microphones must be of good quality and range. They must have on board noise reduction features so that a degree of voice clarity maintained. If you can lay your hands on a studio quality microphone, so much the better. The PA system mixer must also be properly examined. You should not purchase systems which offer low quality connectors because the low quality connectors can severely degrade the voice quality. You must also consider the number of channels that you want. There is no point in buying a 16 channel mixer when an 8 channel mixer should do the trick. The PA amplifier that you want to purchase must also be chosen carefully. You must be careful not to waste money on high gain amplifier when you do not want to cover an area as large as a football ground. Other important considerations are Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Distortion and Noise. Amplifier is to be the single most expensive equipment in entire PA system. You must be careful while choosing it. The loudspeakers are also an important component of PA system. Unfortunately this is the place where people think to cut costs after they purchase a swanky amplifier. The fact that it is the speaker which shall convert electronic signal to sound wave speaks about its importance. Cables are also an important consideration while choosing a PA system. Look for audio grade cables which are sturdy and durable.
